Lucky No.7

31/10/2009

No surprises Barry Sheene was the schoolboy hero for a hell of a lot of English boys in the 70’s, he certainly was mine (although later replaced by Jim Rockford). He was the first person to make GP sexy and  gave the green light for blokes to stare at the screen whilst their wives were happy to admire his other charms. His motor racing career was amazing, winning the British 125cc series when he was just 20 and coming second in the World 125cc the next year. He had ‘that crash‘ in 1975 that threatened to end his career but went on to become World Champion in 1976 and took the title again in 1977, became arch rival with Kenny Roberts and retired in 1984. Clearly a whole lot more went on in between this very, very potted history, so best check this Wiki article or buy the book for the full story on this incredible racer.
